Description
The majority of cats impounded by animal control officers, and many cats admitted to animal welfare shelters, are classified as stray. Few have identification or are reclaimed, and many are timid and shy cats who are at high risk of euthanasia. They are brought to shelters by members of the public who believe the cat will be “better off in the shelter” or are trapped because they are thought to be causing a nuisance. Most unowned, free-living cats in urban areas are being intentionally fed by humans. Semi-owners who regularly feed cats they do not own often say they talk to the cats daily, and the cats help them through tough times. Semi-owners feeding one to two cats represent a huge untapped pool of adopters for these cats who would otherwise be at high risk of euthanasia in a shelter. By providing free sterilization, microchipping and licensing for these cats, most semi-owners can be converted to owners. Learn how a program decreased shelter admissions and euthanasia by getting semi-owned cats adopted.
